A troubled Scottish rugby player who doesn't play by the rules. A vivacious man-eater who's given up on love. When it comes to Lachlan and Kayla, opposites don't just attract - they explode. From the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling author of The Pact and The Offer, comes The Play, a standalone spinoff and contemporary romance about taking chances and rescuing hearts. Kayla Moore has always been comfortable with her feisty, maneating reputation. At least it was fine until she hit her thirties and saw her best friends Stephanie and Nicola settle down with Linden and Bram McGregor, leaving Kayla to be the odd one out. Tired of being the third wheel with nothing but one-night stands and dead-end dates in San Francisco, Kayla decides to take a vow of celibacy and put men on the backburner. That is until she lays her eyes on Linden and Bram's cousin, hot Scot Lachlan McGregor. Lachlan is her sexual fantasy come to life - tall, tatted, and built like a Mack truck. With a steely gaze and successful rugby career back in Edinburgh, he's the kind of man that makes her want to throw her vow right out the window. But Lachlan's quiet and intense demeanor makes him a hard man to get to know, let alone get close to. It isn't until the two of them are thrown together one long, unforgettable night that Kayla realizes there is so much more to this brooding macho man than what meets the eye. But even with sparks flying between the two, Lachlan can't stay in America forever. Now, Kayla has to decide whether to uproot her whole life and chance it all on someone she barely knows or risk getting burned once again. Sometimes love is a game that just needs to be played.

One of the most emotional and heartbreakingly beautiful books I’ve read this year. I couldn’t have loved it more!Anyone that follows my reviews, even half the time, knows what an huge Karina Halle fan I am. I live to read her books and feel she is one of the most diverse and underrated authors in the romance genre. Lachlan appears briefly in The Offer, but you don’t have to read it in order to enjoy The Play. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read about another McGregor man, but right away, it becomes obvious he is quite different from his two cousins. Lachlan is definitely more brooding and darker; he doesn’t earn his nickname “The Beast” without reason. I have adored Kayla since The Pact, and couldn’t wait to explore all the layers underneath the good time and hilarious persona. With their personalities, I just knew this was going to be quite the explosion. The angst is off the charts and some of the sexiest scenes don’t even involve a kiss. He simply calls Kayla “Love” and it is one the best pet names, ever. I was constantly melting with his quite and unassuming sexiness.
~ “I thought I was going to go over the edge.”
~ “I would have gone right with you…”
While Lachlan and Kayla’s relationship moves at a fast pace, it was perfect and believable for these two. It is also not without intensity and tribulations. Lachlan is hiding so much hurt and deep wounds underneath his tough exterior. My heart ached for him constantly. It is easy to see why he is so drawn to abused and discarded animals. The interactions he has with them are some of my favorites from the book. Karina does an excellent job of incorporating a serious and heartbreaking issue into the storyline. As a “mom” to two rescue Boxers, this book is even more personal than usual.
“I know what’s it like to be cast aside, to feel unwanted, to believe you have no one to fight for you. I’ve been there.”
While I will not spoil any details, the book is my worst ugly cry of 2015 thus far. You will simply have to read it to find out why. Despite the tears, I absolutely loved it! Karina has some of her most intense and heartbreaking scenes in the second half of this book. Rest assured though, I was smiling at the end. It was awesome seeing Stephanie/Linden and Bram/Nicola so happy and in love. I am not certain there will be another book from this group, but Brigs definitely needs a story. I’ll be waiting patiently for whatever she writes next.

The Play Karina Halle 9781518896378 Books Reviews
This book, these characters, and goodness this story. The Play was another brilliantly written and emotionally captivating story from Karina Halle. With each story, each character, Karina seems to find a way to completely draw you into in depth story lines. It’s true I’m an emotional reader but lately it’s been hard for me to become emotionally invested in a story, but the moment that I read the prologue to The Play, I wanted to cry. I wanted protect Lachlan, to heal him, to help, and give him all the comfort that he needed. It gutted me and yet I wanted more.
On the surface Kayla and Lachlan seemed to be two vastly different people but that couldn’t be further from the truth. They were a perfect balance to one another. They had both reached a point in their lives where they both wanted more. Maybe starting a relationship just days before Lachlan was scheduled to return to Scotland was not an easy decision but there was a spark there. It wasn’t instantaneous, it was slow building and careful process and it came across as authentic. The two of them together was intense, passionate, and sexy as hell. Their chemistry came through on the pages and it was nothing short of electric.
Lachlan was such a complex character. He was broken and hurt and his past was peppered with was pain. Yet Lachlan was this beast of a man but he was compassionate, sweet, and, and romantic. He kept most of his pain hidden and he didn’t open up to many people. His pain was his and his along but he was also tired of not needing anyone. Of not wanting anyone.
Kayla was a serial dater. She was feisty, determined, and she was’t afraid of trying anything once. She faced life without hesitation but she was also tired of the dating scene. She was tired of wanting something more substantial in her life and she’s sworn off men. Lachlan came into her life and seemingly wrong time but their puzzle pieces just seem to fit together. They were two people that were searching for more and they found it in one another. They allowed each other to see the bit of vulnerability they each wanted to keep hidden.
This book was pure passion and intensity. It had it’s humor, raw heat (my god the love scenes were out of this world hot!!!), and romance. Plus it had Karina’s characteristic flawless writing and emotion. Yes, it’s a bit longer than your average romance novel but it came together so well. This is definitely one of my favorite novels from her.
I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN!
Let me just say that the author had me with three words... Scottish leading man, but holy cow I don't think I can spell how HOT he is.
You can't help but want to come through the book and give Lachlan a hug (and so much more). But over and over this book just gutted me and still I couldn't put it down. Don't get me wrong there are parts in this book that you want to slap both Kayla and Lachlan silly, but they have REAL life problems that make them so relatable.
I will be going back to read about the cousins and I can't wait to read all of the future books.
This fast became a book that I will go back to over and over again.
